Degrading plastic on sealed strategy guides - what to do?
I believe strategy guide collections are allowed in discussion on this sub, apologies if not.
I have a bundle of sealed Prima strategy guides for Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (the guide came in collectible covers with Charizard, Blastoise, and Pikachu - this bundle is one of each). I bought this years and years ago and stored it in an acid-free archival box with my other old strategy guides. I went into the boxes recently and noticed the plastic wrap is degrading - see images.
Now I'm wondering what to do. Is this just going to disintegrate away eventually and it would be better for me to tear it off now and protect the books another way? Or is the original packing seal worth preserving as long as I can? I worry a little bit that the disintegrating plastic might leave a residue behind if I don't shed it early, but I'm honestly not sure.
So I'm looking to this sub for general advice from folks who have experienced similar issues. What do you do when a seal on an item in your collection rips or degrades? Do you just bite the bullet, unwrap it, and call it done? Do you try to preserve the seal as long as possible? Or do you try to sell it before the seal completely gives out? (For the record I'm not interested in selling myself, but I'm curious to hear others' experiences!)
