Cameras in hospital rooms

I wanted to hear your thoughts on cameras in hospital rooms. I was in an accident close to Ben Taub hospital here in Houston. When I woke up the next day I noticed a camera pointed right at me. I was like what the hell is this? I sat there just looking at the camera wondering why a hospital would have cameras pointed right at their patience bed. About this time my nurse walked in and said “ Hey look who’s awake” I said “yes I am just lucky to be alive I guess and I immediately asked about the camera. She responded that they’re in pretty much every room in the hospital. She said they were installed several years ago because patients would intentionally hurt themselves and then try and sue the hospital for the injuries.

Evidently they were also having issue with male patients groping the nurses and saying obscene things to them. None of this dawned on me before she told me this. I was shocked, but I guess I shouldn’t have been. People can be horrible. This hospital takes care of a large part of the homeless and mentally ill patients. Also some of them are on drugs or drunk when they come in.

She said the cameras aren’t actually turned on unless there has been a problem from a patient in the past or if they feel like a patient might be unruly. She said the patient really has to have a emergency and the situation really must be life or death to be admitted because they have so many people that come here daily. A lot of the patients here are homeless, or on drug or alcohol. As this hospital will take care of you even if you have no insurance.

After our conversation I felt a better about the cameras and completely understood why the cameras are there. I’ve just never seen or heard of something like this in a regular hospital except for maybe in a mental institution or a rehab. What are your thoughts on this?

Edit: I am very thankful for this hospital and I appreciate the services they provide. I am in no way bashing this hospital. They have treated me like a king while being here. They’re also the number one trauma center here in Houston.
