Marriage into an Indonesian Family as a Foreigner

Salam! I hope Ramadan is going very well for my brother's and sisters in Indonesia.

Today I have a question a Muslim brother and dear friend of mine is marrying into an Indonesian family soon inshallah he found a girl even his parents love.

As they've been talking a lot and getting close they were discussing how marriage works in Indonesian culture, his potential told him that there's a X amount of money his family gives to her family half of it to show his dedication and willingness to marry her and the othe rhalf is paid when his family go to do the nikkah in Indonesia

I would like to know if this is an Indonesian culture even amongst Indonesians where the grooms family give money to the brides family. And if it is true what is for?

His parents are just a little concerned about scams overseas
