Will the coaching pipeline evolve?
The Premier League soccer team I follow is probably going to fire their coach (fingers crossed), and it got me thinking about the coaching pipelines in soccer vs the NBA.
This is based solely on my impressions and I could be wrong, but in soccer, it seems like a lot of head coaches get their start in less competitive leagues. Eg one of the rumored candidates got his first managing job in Sweden, and only moved to the EPL after some success there.
Now, that hasn’t traditionally happened in the NBA, because the basketball leagues in other countries just weren’t on the same level.
Granted, they still aren’t on the same level, but it seems like the gap is closing. And obviously the NBA has been bringing in more players from other countries over the last couple of decades or so. I wonder whether teams will start to do more of that with coaches.
Will it become more common for a promising young coach (whether American or not) to run a team or two overseas, and then get a shot at an NBA head coaching or top assistant gig?
Just as a thought experiment, could we see, say, the Lakers hiring the coach of the most successful team in Australia or Brazil or wherever?
Or maybe it’s already happening and I’ve just missed it!
