How do you create interesting compositions

I've been painting for nearly 20 years now, and I still struggle to intentionally develop a dynamic and interesting composition. Usually when I succeed in this regard, it's by accident. I've seen artists use famous paintings as reference for their own new compositions, which im considering trying. But im wondering how do you all go about developing a successful composition? Are there any books you can recommend to help in this area?
