The truth about braces / retainers
There is a lot of misinformation in this sub Reddit about braces and retainers about the effect they have ones face.
So I went down the rabbit hole spending hours doing research, talking to doctors that don’t benefit from me wearing braces, understanding facial development, how braces and retainers work. And I came to the conclusion that orthodontics can only be bad for you facial aesthetics if there are extractions or the orthodontist doesn’t know what he/she is doing.
one of the argument against braces is that the teeth are connected to the maxilla so if the teeth can’t move cuz of the braces/retainers the maxilla can’t expand, wich is not true because if the maxilla expands then the gums pull the teeth back to were they are suppose to be, at such a small scale and so slowly that your braces/ retainers don’t even notice. Your maxilla can expand without your dental arch expanding.
Theres another myth that pulling the front teeth backwards with braces recesses your maxilla by pulling the maxilla backwards, the way that teeth move is the cells remove bone there where the tooth wants to go and put bone where the tooth was. This process is not capable of pulling the entire maxilla backwards, and making it look worse. So moving the teeth, doesn’t mean you move the maxilla. Pulling the front teeth backwards can make you look worse if the orthodontist doesn’t know what he or she is doing by pulling everything too far back, giving a sunken appearance but this doesn’t have to do with maxilla projection but rather lip support. but if lets say the braces are fixing bimaxillary protrusion it can make you look better.
