Why is Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” struggling (compared to other Barbie soundtrack songs with big names) on the US chart, and are her singles underperforming in general?

Just something interesting I noticed when Billboard’s Hot 100 top 10 came out today was that Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” were directly next to each other at position #9 and #10 respectively. “What Was I Made For” was not there, which isn’t really all that notable on its own—not every song, she makes will be a hit—but I found it fascinating given the popularity of the Barbie movie and the associated album.

This is also interesting because Billie Eilish is extremely popular with Gen Z and I would’ve thought that Barbie-mania would help propel her. Given that she is one of few mainstream A-listers on the soundtrack, it does surprise me that people are not gravitating to it more. What are the possible reasons for its underperformance?

This is even more interesting because the shingles from her album Happier Than Ever underperformed too, generally speaking. I remember people talking about how her single “Lost Cause” did not meet their expectations in terms of chart performance.

Billie Eilish as a personality remains very popular, but does underperformance of her singles signify declining musical popularity? Why or why not, and if so, what can she do to fix this?
