Is Apple math (math and engineering) worth it?

I have decided to commit to Queen’s for engineering, and I am now an incoming first year student this fall. Since the start of grade 12, I’ve wanted to do Queen’s engineering (and sorta preferred it over loo and uoft) mainly because it has the math and engineering stream, which is the only North American university that offers such a thing. My career goals have always been something in either computer engineering or math, and this program seemingly combines the two. I’ve been interested in tech stuff, as well as math contest-like problems (though I’m not very good at them) and looking at proofs because I love learning how things work and solving complex problems, so I’ll most likely take the Apple comp route. I am also very happy and grateful I made it to this program, and the future for it seems promising especially after the huge donation.

Though, I’ve been reading through, and saw that Apple math may not be worth it due to its difficulty and disadvantage in job opportunities? I have gathered a couple questions

  • Is Apple math worth it for the difficulty?
  • Are you disadvantaged with job opportunities and internships when compared to ECE kids?
  • What really are the job prospects for Apple math?
  • I understand that in order to get a good job or internship, I’ll have to work on plenty of side projects and build my resume. Would Apple math give me enough time to do this, or is the course load too heavy compared to ECE?
  • If I ever decide to pursue a masters for engineering, would Apple math help?
  • If at any point I want to transfer to CE, what would be the process?
  • Should I take CE instead for a more traditional route?

In the future, I see myself as someone who can make a good amount of money with a promising job, but also enjoy what I learn and do. I’d rather make $100,000 while doing something I love than make $150,000 while throwing out the trash.
