Would you have been interested in this backdoor pilot coming to fruition? What would you have liked to see in this show?
I for one think it would have been a QUITE big piece of the Archieverse, for a number of reasons.
- It would be the first of four total shows starring women of color. Yes, we had Katy Keene, where we had Josie before, and also the Calbotts, but well, the lead was Katy.
- This show would feature the "formal" entry (after the Riverdale S5 pilot) of actually important characters from the Archie comics, who would be supporting characters in this story: Nancy Wood (originally Chuck Clayton's girlfriend in the Archie comics) would be Melody's girlfriend in this version. Alan Mayberry (originally Josie's boyfriend in the Josie and the Pussycats comics) would be Valerie's boyfriend in this version, who would have proposed to her in the Riverdale S5 pilot.
- The show would probably have had Melody as the narrator, since that's how it was in the backdoor pilot. It makes sense considering that this is the case with the Riverdale series, where the narrator is Jughead despite the protagonist being Archie. Here, Mel would be the narrator dispite the main Pussycat being Josie.
- This series could have been the alternative to S6, with the main plot being Josie following the mysterious death of Myles McCoy, which COULD have been connected to voodoo magic. Maybe if this spin-off came to fruition, S6 would have followed the lines of "subtlety" regarding the supernatural overtones of S5, and the full supernatural plot would have gone to Josie's spin-off.
- If the spin-off survived AT LEAST until its second season, it's likely that the 50s plot from S7 on Riverdale would NOT have happened. This plot already happened after both Sabrina's 5th season and Katy's 2nd season were cancelled. Having "the entire universe" minus the characters in Pussycats traveling to the 50s via a magical comet would have broken the continuity of the Archieverse.
- Sweet Pea would have been the male lead of the show. I don't really know how to feel about this. I know that in the fandom, the Sweet Pea and Josie ship is very accepted, for some reason. In my case, Sweet Pea is just another character. I mean, I like him, and I like Jordan too and I think he deserved a lead, because he's super talented. I just don't find the match between him and Josie appealing. S1 would probably have been that kind of show where I would have ended up being more interested in the side couples than the main one. My chicken heart still can't get over Archie and Josie's chemistry in S3, it's my guilty pleasure, even though I'll always be a Barchie at heart.
Those are the points I could think of, at least. I really think it would have been fun to have a Pussycats spin off. These three characters are HUGE in the entire Archie universe outside of Riverdale and even outside of the comics. It's incredible how underutilized they were on this show :(
