First timer to Wegner… didn’t disappoint
Went to Ohio from Houston to visit my ailing grandmother. Family of five, three of us are rockhounders. On the way up, we stopped at a couple duds in Kentucky and decided to visit Caesars Creek State Park just north of Cincy (if you’re in the area, GO!). On our way home, we hit Caesars again (we shared our finds with my young nieces to keep the rockhounding itch unscratched). We’re hauling down the interstate and my sixteen year old son goes, “Dad, I’ve been looking and we will on be like an hour and a half from Mt. Ida…” Mt. Ida has been our list for two years and it never occurred to me to stop by heading home. Well, it didn’t take much convincing. So, woefully unprepared we headed to Walmart. The next morning we showed up with two buckets, two foldable shovels, and a geology hammer (never leaves the car). It started pouring rain but man did we have a blast. The rockhounding internet famous Wegner Mine Chris did not disappoint! Soon we were off digging like we hadn’t had shower in a week and our backside was itching. I quit about halfway through and just watched my mid-teens digging and enjoying the hunt. The elation of finding a point, watching them strain as they reached into deep holes they dug, and not worrying about getting dirty in the wet Arkansas red clay. If you get the chance,GO! We met so many great and enthusiastic people, made a lifetime of memories, and brought home some great finds (for us)). Happy hounding folks!
