Pilot episode appreciation post
I don’t know how many rewatches I have had, and there’s one currently running, and I’ve never made any post online like this anywhere about loving a show this much but I just want to share why I think Superstore's Pilot episode is truly exceptional.
First, with the exception of Jonah and Mateo, it seems like everyone else in the cast already knew each other as coworkers. It’s like they’ve been working together for a while now, having break times together, sharing gossips, etc. It’s an energy thing, how they related to each other, how they tolerated each other… I hope I’m making sense here LOL … It really feels like we, as the audience, just happened to drop by a store in the middle of some random day where everyone’s been working at for a while, except for two new hires. It’s great ensemble work for the actors. I don’t know how they achieved it, but kudos to the actors and directors.
Next, the actors seem to have really grown into the skin of their respective characters right from Day One. For most other sitcoms, the first season is when the actors learn to be comfortable in their characters’ skins and gaits and speech patterns and mannerisms and quirks. But for the Superstore actors, you already get the full sweet deal on the Pilot Episode! It was such a great start as far as characterization is concerned, so that they could only build up from there… which is why there’s so much character development in everyone through the seasons.
I also want to appreciate the writers who came up with the Glenn - Dina dynamic. The only reason the floor workers are able to get away with their antics is because Glenn’s character is the way he is, and then Dina is the perfect counterpoint.
