20 Years in IT: Looking for a Direction

Hello SysAdmin Folks,

I began my IT career around the turn of the century, and have been a system administrator for most of those years. During this time, I've touched upon many common technologies, but never really had a specialty. I've dealt with everything from Novell servers, to Cisco routers, from NT and Exchange to Windows and Linux servers, from RDS to Citrix to O365 administration, from networking to pen-testing, etc... I've created hundreds, if not thousands (ok, maybe not thousands) of scripts over the years automating everything that I could.

At this point, I am a senior sysadmin dealing with mostly Windows Server and Citrix (and dabbling in RHEL) , but feel that I've become stagnant and stale. I still have a passion and strong interest in this field, but I'm not sure where I want to focus my efforts and where I want to be in the next 5 years (I still have at least 20 years to go unless all of you want to start a gofundme drive for my retirement for no apparent reason).

I have a lot of idle/down time at the moment, and fully functional Pluralsight account. So, I'd like to learn as much as I can and start heading down a new path, or at least bolster my relevant skillsets. I've been with my current employer for over 10 years, and my salary is good. But, I feel that I could, and should be doing so much more. Ultimately, I've become complacent.

That said, one half of me wants to follow a path which will demand a higher salary, and the other half wants to follow a path that will lead me to a position where I can work with my favorite aspects of IT: scripting/automation and security. I'm sure there's a happy medium there somewhere. I'm thinking about Python, AWS/Azure, advanced Linux administration. However, if I'm going to be honest, I would stick with Windows Server administration and Citrix if I knew I could ride them out for the next 20 years with significant pay increases in that timeframe. But, I think that's just the lazy side of me speaking, and unrealistic.

I'm just looking for career and life advice so I can make it to retirement and remain happy with my career until then.

Thanks in advance!
