I started making my own endurance/energy gels, and I really like it

For the past year, I've been making my own energy gels. I got tired of paying huge amounts for every long run I was doing, so I did some research and found that all of the gel companies use the same ingredients: maltodextrin and fructose. GU uses a 2:1 ratio of maltodextrin (just long chains of glucose) to fructose, whereas SIS beta fuel uses 1:.8. I think Maurten is 1:1.

After trying it for over a year in both high intensity and very long activities, I'm glad to report that it's awesome. Way cheaper, tastes amazing, gives you total control, etc. Here's a video on how to make it.

Edit: after answering many questions below, here is a relevant podcast about fueling, and this one about sodium and hydration.

Have any of you started making your own? How do you like it?
