JGEC Honest Review
Hey Everyone,
I am a first-year undergraduate student at JGEC, and after spending seven months here, I want to give a proper, unbiased, and honest review of this college.
1. Academics
When I was in my first semester, which started on August 28, 2024, classes began getting canceled from the second week onward. Most of the time, our classes did not take place. By the end of the semester, our math syllabus was never completed, several physics topics were skipped, and one professor covered two to three topics through online lectures.
During our internal math exam, the professor gave us 13-14 questions a day before the exam, out of which only three questions were picked for the actual test. This was our internal exam.
Currently, I am in my second semester, and classes continue to get canceled regularly. One of the subjects in this semester, Humanities, almost never has classes.
Another issue is the delay in exam results. Our Semester 1 exams ended on January 24, 2025, and as of March 17, 2025, the results have not been released. Last year, the results came out in mid-April, so delays seem to be a recurring issue. (This might be due to the autonomous nature of the college.)
2. Clubs and Societies
There are many active clubs and societies, which is commendable. Regular classes, seminars, competitions, and exciting events take place every week. This is a huge positive of the college.
3. Placements
I don’t have much direct knowledge about placements yet, but from what I have heard from seniors:
- Tech branches have an average package of 6-7 LPA. If you are good at coding, you can easily grab a 9-10 LPA package on campus.
- Non-tech (Core) branches: Most core companies have a decent placement record, but tech placements are restricted for core students. However, last year, SAIL (PSU) recruited three candidates from our college, and this year, BEL and another PSU also came for placements. Regular core companies continue to recruit students.
- The average package for core branches is around 4-5 LPA. However, if you are exceptional in your field, you can get PSU offers ranging from 9-10 LPA.
4. Hostel
This is one area where you need to be very careful. Ragging still happens, though it hasn't happened to me yet. Almost 85% of students experience some form of ragging or what is called an “intro session.”
Also, be extremely cautious while selecting your roommates. Around 60-70% of hostel students engage in smoking or drinking.
5. Seniors
One of the best things about this college is the seniors. They treat juniors like younger brothers. In other colleges, I have heard that students must call seniors "Sir/Ma’am", but here, there is no such culture. Every senior is helpful and approachable, and you can count on them for guidance.
6. Tech and Cultural Fest
I will update this section later, as I have yet to experience these events. Our tech fest (SRISTI) is happening at the end of March, and our cultural fest (JECLAT) is in the first week of April. I will provide updates in mid-April.
That’s pretty much my honest take on JGEC so far. Every college has its ups and downs, and I just wanted to share what it’s really like here. If you’re thinking of joining or just curious, hope this helps! Feel Free to Dm me if you have any Question regarding the College.
Peace ;-)!
