Do you think that Jeff Goldblum's casting as the Wizard of Oz should have been a surprise?
I didn't feel that knowing he was playing that role ahead of time ruined the movie for me. But that being said, given how the film held him offscreen for so long and built up the character for long periods of time, they probably had an easy excuse to not make his casting public.
I don't know whether this would have worked without it being leaked somehow, but they could have left him out of the marketing or cast announcements and just kept him hidden and then let the audience be just as immediately enamoured with him and his character as Glinda and Elspeth were. We'd also have the immediate expectation of him being an enjoyable and delightful character in the same moment as the two of them seeing him for the first time.
That being said, you could argue that knowing he's playing the role ahead of time makes you just as excited to see him as the two leads, and more impactful when he's a cruel fraud of a man. What do you guys think?
