Questions about DnD lore books

Hey, I'm new to DnD and wanted to know if there are any general or introductory 5 e lore books. Seems like most are less novels or encyclopedias and more like gameplay guides for players and dungeon masters.

In 40k, lore and gameplay books/rulesets are distinct and here it seems like they're more intertwined with each other or am I wrong?
