Hey. Sorry, but I've basically been using the "start another game and end it immediately before shutting the game down" method since I first made this post, and I haven't lost an unlocked character since. (I've only five or six more to unlock, I think.) I do have the Xbox version as well, and I could try to do that there, but that's gonna take a whole lot of unlocking before I reach that point.

A little late to the party here (you might already have succeeded), but one thing I noticed is that when I tried doing this with one of the original early characters I unlocked (Porta): when I was about to selecting the Moongolow stage, I noticed that the image on the stage selector showed the background tiles as a light pink-ish red rather than the normal bathroom tile blue. I kind of got the impression that this was the indication that I was going to get the correct boss. And lo and behold, that's when I finally got it done.
