My 5th Great Grandfather fought with his son in the 19th Tennessee Infantry. He was killed at his first engagement at Mill Springs, missing the Battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Bentonville. His son deserted the day after his death.

My 4th GGF, Andrew Baker (left) with his veteran brother, James. Andrew didn’t serve despite being the oldest, but James fought with 5 of his brothers in the 8th Kentucky Infantry, and saw action at Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Lookout Mountain.

My 5th Great Uncle, Corporal of the 3rd West Virginia Infantry. He was wounded in the left leg on August 29, 1862 during Jackson’s defense of Stony Ridge, just before the Battle of Bull Run II, which resulted in amputation. Circa 1900.

My 5th Great Grandfather of the 15th West Virginia Infantry miraculously managed to avoid any form of combat as he went into hospital right as his regiment started engaging. He died of pneumonia during the Siege of Petersburg, missing the surrender of Appomattox.

My 4th Great Grandfather from the 1850-1890s. Despite having 5 brothers that served in the Union Army, he surprisingly didn’t serve at all. Possibly because he had 6 children when the war started.
